Jesse Robredo, Pride of Bicol!

Congratulations! Jesse Robredo, a multi-awarded (both local and international) former mayor of Naga City and Ramon Magsaysay awardee for Government Service, to our kababayan and the Pride of Nagueños, now a DILG Secretary and a nominee for the World Mayor - The 2010 Contest!

St. James the Greater: Our Patron Saint

SAINT JAMES the GREATER
Apostle
Patron of Spain
(†44)

Among the twelve Apostles, three were chosen to be the close companions of our Blessed Lord, and of these James was one. He, with Peter and John, was admitted to the house of Jairus when his dead child was raised to life (Luke 8:40 ff.); only these three were taken up to the high mountain of Thabor and beheld the face of Jesus shining as the sun, and His garments white as snow (Mark 9:2-7). These three alone witnessed the fearful agony in Gethsemane. (Luke 22:39-45)

What was it that won James a place among the favorite three? Faith, burning, impetuous and outspoken, the straightforwardness of the true Israelite, were visible in him; but these qualities needed purifying before the “Son of Thunder” could proclaim the Gospel of peace. It was James who suggested fire from heaven to consume the inhospitable Samaritans, and who sought a place of honor beside Christ in His kingdom. Yet Our Lord, in rebuking his presumption, prophesied his faithfulness unto death. (Mark 10:38-40) He went to Spain after the death of Our Lord, and remained there for nine years, according to tradition. The famous Basilica of Saint James of Compostello, one of the most frequented pilgrimage sites of Europe, the site also of countless miracles, commemorates the memory of the nation’s beloved Apostle.

In the year 44 Saint James, who was at that time in Jerusalem, was brought before King Herod Agrippa. The Apostle had been preaching fearlessly there, curing the sick and the blind, and delivering possessed persons. Two magicians were sent by the authorities to stop his doings by their charms, but both were converted. His enemies were not defeated by that, however, and paid two Roman captains to incite a sedition during the Apostle’s preaching, then seize him as its author. A certain Josias, a scribe among the Pharisees, put a cord around his neck and took him before the third Herod, grandson of the first, murderer of the Innocents, and nephew of the second, who had the Baptist decapitated. This new sycophant of the Roman Emperors, desiring to conciliate the Jews and make them forget his non-Jewish origins, decided to do so by persecuting the Christians. Without delay he condemned Saint James to die by the sword. The Apostle’s fearless confession of Jesus crucified so moved the scribe Josias, that he too confessed Christ and begged pardon of the Saint. He was taken with the Apostle to the place of execution, where Saint James and his convert died together.

The Apostle won the three crowns of heroism: he is a Doctor par excellence of the Faith, he was the first Apostle to be martyred, and according to Saint Epiphanus and other historians, he always conserved his virginity. He is the patron of Spain. A Spanish author by the name of Tamayo reports fifteen different apparitions of Saint James to the kings and princes of Spain, followed each time by some specific assistance for the benefit of the land.

Reflection: We must all desire a place in the kingdom of our Father; but can we drink the chalice which He holds out to each one of us? Possumus, we must say with Saint James — “We can!” — but only in the strength of Him who drank it first for us.

The Peace Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

***

A simple yet beautiful prayer. A fitting reminder in this day and age where our lives are so much focused on the things of the world and we tend to neglect the most important things in life - our relationships with our families, our friends, our loved ones, our fellowmen and with our God. My prayer is that peace would reign in our hearts so that our nation and the world will be at peace. c",)

Happy Father's Day, Tatay!

As defined by Wikipedia, Father's Day is a day honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June in 55 of the world's countries (including here in the Philippines) and on other days elsewhere. It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers.

To my Dear Tatay, THANK YOU and I LOVE YOU! Even if you're not that very vocal as do most fathers, I know how PROUD you are to all of us, your children. I may not have lots of fond memories with you (due to life's circumstances), I know you love me and is very proud of me. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY po! - c",)

To our dear, Fr. Aloysius Schwartz, Maraming Salamat po! We love you!

And to all Father's out there - HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! The world will not be complete without you!

Feast of St. Anthony of Padua & My youngest Bro's Birthday!

June 13 - In the Catholic Church this day is widely celebrated being the feast day of one of the most loved and admired saint in history, St. Anthony of Padua, a Doctor of the Church.

Anthony of Lisbon (or Padua) is known to have become the "quickest" saint in the history of the Catholic Church because he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX less than one year after his death on the 30th of May of 1232.

He is typically depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus, to whom He miraculously appeared, and is commonly referred to today as the "finder of lost articles." - thus he became the Patron Saint of Lost Things, the Poor and Travelers. Upon exhumation, some 336 years after his death, his body was found to be corrupted, yet his tongue was totally incorrupt, so perfect were the teachings that had been formed upon it. - c",)

Today also is the birthday of my youngest brother - Antonio (now its obvious where he got his name), I think its from our Grandma being a devout Catholic and who usually refers to the Calendar of Saints in suggesting name for her 'apo' - but obviously not in my case. c",)

Simple birthday treat for him at Shakey's Galleria after attending the 4:30 pm mass.
Happy Birthday, Bro! May your dreams come true!

Pinoy & The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

Our Australian boss in the Singapore office yesterday keep on asking us if we will watch the opening and games of the World Cup and pose an intriguing question coz he can't understand why the Philippines displays a very little interest on the World Cup which currently sweeps the planet.

As I observed at the malls here and even on fast food chains (yesterday I even managed to get one tumbler from KFC here; I simply like it and it's really nice and will be useful) World Cup advertisements thru merchandise and other stuffs scattered everywhere and even on their TV channels.

And now I stumble upon this article in the Inquirer.net which hopefully might satisfy if not totally answer his question. :)

So am I going to watch? My answer to him is simply No. I'd better surf the net or watch NBA finals! :)

Hopefully the new generation will appreciate and love this sport as well and who knows we might have our very own Philippine team (in the next 4 or 8 or 12 years...) to watch and cheer. It's not far from reality.c",)

112th Anniversary of Philippine Independence! Mabuhay ka Inang Bayan!

Today, marks the 112th Anniversary of Philippine Independence!  This will be also the last Independence Day celebration of the current administration and President, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

By June 30, the President-Elect Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino will begin his reign as the 15th President of the Republic of the Philippines.

May this be a new beginning for our beloved country and I just hope and pray that the new leaders of our country will lead by example and live out to their promises during the campaign period.

Let's work together for a BETTER and truly FREE Philippines! Let's not waste the freedom that our forefathers hardly fought for with their sweat and blood.

Maligayang araw ng KALAYAAN! Mabuhay tayong lahat! and may God Bless the Philippines! c",)

ASMSI Ninetyniners - Habol sa Summer Outing 2010

It all started sometime during the Summer of 2006, small group meetings, malling and bonding, then before that summer ends (May 27 & 28, 2006), a batch outing was organized dubbed as Batch '99 Habol sa Summer Outing with the theme "Pinag-isa ng kahapon, tatayong magkabigkis sa mga darating pang taon". Even if that first bonding of our batch did not ended well due to an unfortunate event that's beyond our control it does not put an end either instead it makes the bond that we are trying to make grow stronger.

From then on it became a tradition of our batch to hold a Summer Outing as well as Christmas Party Outing.

Last year (March 2009) our batch successfully hosted the ASMSI Grand Alumni Homecoming 2009 and the 24th Foundation Day and Childrens' Birthday (August 2009) of the Sisters of Mary School Boystown and Girlstown campuses in Silang Cavite.

And this year as the summer ends and rainy season begins, we will hold our Annual Batch Summer Outing - Unang Hataw sa Tag-ulan! (its not yet too late though, our summer become very busy with the elections and other things)

For more info please visit our Yahoo Group at: ASMSI Ninetyniners and our FB Group at: ASMSI Ninetyniners or you may visit our thread at the ASMSI website.

I'm hoping to see as many of my batchmates as possible!  Thank you very much!

* More pics coming soon!
